ESF Guidance Notes Open for Comment: Nov. 2 to Dec. 15, 2017

In August 2016, the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved the Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), which will go into effect in the Fall of 2018. The World Bank is preparing Guidance Notes for Borrowers as a resource to help explain requirements contained in the Standards and provide helpful examples. 

From November 2 to December 15, 2017, the draft Guidance Notes for Borrowers are open for public comment. You can view the Guidance Notes here and send your comments to esfimplementation@worldbank.org.

 

 

We Heard You: Survey Results from the 2017 Annual Meetings Civil Society Policy Forum

683 CSO representatives from 67 countries attended the 2017 WBG/IMF Annual Meetings and Civil Society Policy Forum (CSPF) that took place from October 10-13, 2017. The highlight of the CSPF was the Civil Society Town Hall with WBG President Dr. Jim Yong Kim and IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde. You can watch the replay here

More than 120 attendees responded to the CSO participants survey that was sent out at the end of the Forum. An infographic with key registration data and survey results can be found here

 

 

We-Fi is Open for Business

The Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) was officially launched following the inaugural meeting of its Governing Committee. We-Fi already has more than $340 million in donor commitments. See the statement issued by its donor countries here.

Its first call for proposals was launched on October 13, 2017. Only multilateral development banks are eligible to apply for funds under this call for proposals and are encouraged to partner with UN agencies, international financial institutions, civil society organizations, business groups, and/or other entities currently working in this field to help implement activities. Countries Commit to Strong Action on Human Capital to Drive Economic Growth

At the World Bank Group’s 2017 Annual Meetings, seven countries committed to transformational investments in people both at home and at the global level.

These commitments followed World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim’s presentation of the Human Capital Project, a new effort to understand the link between investing in people and economic growth, and to accelerate financing for human capital investments. IFC Good Practice Handbook on Use of Security Forces: Assessing and Managing Risks and Impacts

IFC has released a Handbook providing practical, project-level guidance for IFC clients and stakeholders, including other private sector companies and their consultants, operating in emerging markets to better understand and implement the security-related provisions outlined in Performance Standard 4.

Specific guidance is provided throughout the document to differentiate expectations for companies with lower risks from those with more complex and challenging security related risks and impacts. The Handbook is also available in Spanish and French

Multiphase Programmatic Approach

The World Bank’s new Multiphase Programmatic Approach (MPA) and Streamlining Operational Restructuring have come into effect. The first operation to use the Multiphase Programmatic Approach, Madagascar: Improving Nutrition Outcomes, is currently under preparation.
